The Assistantship Program is a program available to 11th and 12th graders at ISHCMC - American Academy in which students can work as interns for our staffs and teachers to gain experience as well as credits. This year, we expanded the program from only library and nurse assistant to a variety of choices in different subjects and areas like Counseling, Administrative, Music, and Physical Education. Although this is only the second year of this program, it has proven to be a success in terms of making the school a better place and facilitating a professional atmosphere for students in a friendly high school setting. “Effective ways to approach and talk to shy people. I also learned that teamwork is very important in order to accomplish difficult tasks and that the counseling office needs student assistants to help, because sometimes, students can understand students easier than teachers can.” This is the answer of one of our Counseling Assistants when questioned about what he has learned from the Assistantship program. “I learned how to manage students, make them listen to my decisions, and manage my time efficiently.” was the answer from our PE assistant. Each student intern is assigned to an advisor with whom they will work and receive guidances from. Each of them is also required to propose a Research/Action project through which they can help improve the school regarding their intern position. We added a blogging component to this project by requiring assistants to share their current progress. Their stories are available on our website aainterns.weebly.com.
Overall, the program has received a lot of positive feedbacks in its second year running. Quite a few of our interns have reported their appreciation towards the professional experience that they were able to be a part of. “I didn't expect to learn so much and get to do so much as an assistant. I was able to really participate in all the important events and work that my manager is doing. I thought that as a student, I would be limit to just minor tasks, but I wasn’t.” shared our Marketing Assistant.

Author: Alex Nguyen Editor: Julian Ho In the past month, since joining Ms. Heather and Julian, I've been searching for a personal research project. There were so many things that I wanted to accomplish during my internship so I had a lot of trouble narrowing down my top choices. In the end, seeing what Julian was doing with the Assistantship program, it inspired me to do something similar with the SUPA program. SUPA is short for Syracuse University Project Advance. It is a program that allows high school students to take Syracuse University courses at their schools during their high school years. ISHCMC - American Academy is currently offering 5 SUPA courses (Economics, Entrepreneurship, Physics, Academic Writing, Creative Writing, and Web Design) for the 2016-2017 academic year with 33 registrations. My goal with the SUPA program is to be able to create a way for SUPA students to share, appreciate, and learn from each other’s work. I want to achieve this by creating an event called the SUPA Symposium where SUPA students from neighboring countries can come, showcase, and educate others about their work as well as learning about others’ work. Along with this, I want to create a journal called the SUPANOVA to publish these writings and accomplishments. I chose this project because from my time as a SUPA student, I was able to see such amazing and beautiful work being done yet no one to appreciate it. I hope that through this project, the SUPA program and its students will be better recognized for the wonderful effort that they have put in their education.
My first plan is to email all the SUPA teachers and ask them to nominate their best students’ work. Then, I’ll make a timeline of when I want to get everything done by and edit and proofread the nominated work. Author & Editor: Julian Ho When I first signed up to be an Administrative Assistant, I expected writing emails, communicating with school administrators, managing school logistics, and last but not least, learning how to use spreadsheets from the master. When I first joined Ms. Heather in her office, she walked me through her tasks and aspects of our school life that she would like me to develop on. The most discussed topic was about the assistantship program itself. Ms. Heather had an idea of assigning each assistant to write a blog post every term. The blogs would then be featured on a website that she wants me to create. With my zero knowledge in web design, I thought that I was screwed. But it turns out, there was a way for me to go about actual coding. Weebly is a tool that allows you to drag in items and build websites without having to code. With the help of detailed tutorials and the simple mechanisms, I was able to start building the AAInterns website after three short days. Acknowledging the fact that the assistantship program is young, I aim to create a friendly and comprehensible website for students, teachers, and parents alike. Here are the goals that I would like to achieve by creating the website:
I finished adding the layouts and information by the end of October, in time to start editing the first blogs when they came in. My next step will be to design the blog page and upload the first blogs.
