Authors: Vicky Vu, Tran Tran Editor: Julian Ho Since last year, our EAL teachers have launched a project called “Word of the Week” aka “WOW". Every week, a word along with its definition will be announced through our school's Firefly page as well as on the bulletin board between the first and second floor for all students to see. This creates a little challenge for students to expand their vocabulary and try to create a sentence using the word. Submissions are collected and house points are awarded to those participated. As EAL assistants, we chose to further develop “WOW” for our assistant project. Having realized that “WOW” has been widely known within our school but not many people really care enough to participate, we decide to do something about that. I believe that the reason why this project is not receiving much enthusiasm from the students is because they don't realize how important it is to expand their vocabulary and practice creating sentences. Here are some evidences showing the small amount of students who participate in “WOW”: In the first week of school year (August 22nd to August 29th), we only received 19 responses out of 400 students in the school. In the week from September 5th to September 12th, we received 45 responses, which was the highest number of participants in WOW since it was launched. The reason for this is probably because of the announcements that homeroom teachers give their students. Between September 26th to October 2nd , the number of responses dropped to 29 as students started to lose interest as time went. In this school year, we want to promote “WOW” in various ways in order to encourage our students to participate and give them a wide range of vocabulary. Our goals for the project is to increase the amount of participants in WOW to 70 people per week. In our perspectives, learning vocabulary is a very important factor when you are non-native speakers trying to study English. After all, the EAL Department’s responsibility is to help students improve their English skills.
In order to reach our goals, in the first semester of this school year, we have 3 strategies that we want to try. Firstly, from October 3rd to October 14th, we will write short messages on sticky notes and stick them onto lockers for every student to see. Secondly, in the next week (October 17th- October 28th), we will create QR codes which include the link to WOW’s Google form and stick them around school. Students can then scan the QR codes and they will be able to access our Google form and participate in “WOW" within minutes. Finally, between October 31st and November 11th, we will promote our project through our school websites saigonsunbear.com and vle.aavn.edu.vn. We hope that we would be able to find out the most effective method to expand our “WOW” project's popularity.
