Author: Han Pham Editor: Julian Ho Smoking is one of the dangerous activities can harm your body and health. Despite the fact that this topic seems quite familiar and has been widely discussed, a lot of people are still undermining their damaging effects. In Vietnam, a lot of people smoke regularly as a means of relaxation after their stressful working hours. Although children under the age of 18 are not allowed to buy cigarettes in Vietnam, they can still be affected by adult smokers in several ways. Below are some examples: 1. Seeing smoking as an indication of adulthood: Watching the adults smoking might make children think that smoking is ok and is an indication of adulthood. This might lead to them trying to smoke on their own. 2. Secondhand smoke: Children who are surrounded by smokers will also be harmed by secondhand smoke. As scientific research has shown, secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, among which hundreds are toxic and more than 70 can cause cancer. Air pollution caused by cigarettes is also 10 times greater than diesel car exhaust. 3. Domestic economic shortage: Smokers spend time and money buying and smoking cigarettes, which can hinder their family income and health conditions. In general, smokers will be less productive at work and their children's lives and education will be affected by the income shortage. I've been doing some interviews with the students and teachers in our school, asking them a few questions related to smoking. The result is quite shocking. Besides nicotine, none of them know what else are inside the cigarettes, and how they could cause harms to our bodies. The interview had been recorded and is in the progress of being edited and turned into video.
For this campaign, I want to inform students about how dangerous cigarettes are, and the contents inside the cigarettes that could be harmful to our bodies. My goal is to inform more than 80% of the school by the end of the year.
